BAGUIO CITY (March 31, 2022) – A dozen soldiers gave up and more than a dozen more firearms were seized Wednesday ending the standoff at the compound of Pilar town Abra vice mayor Josefina Somera-Disono where her supposed bodyguards sought refuge after breaching a checkpoint and firing at policemen Tuesday morning.
Twelve former military men who served as security aides of the Vice Mayor submitted themselves to the custody of the Philippine Army for investigation by the Philippine National Police, said Cordillera police director Brig. Gen. Ronald Lee, who himself led the negotiations leading to the peaceful end of the tension.
At least 14 licensed assorted firearms from the camp of Vice Mayor Disono have been submitted to the police for forensic examinations to determine if any of those were fired and would match to the bullet round fired at a police vehicle at the checkpoint on Monday.
A group of armed men Monday morning rammed into a police checkpoint at the town center hitting two policemen, fired at those manning it and rushed towards the compound of Somera-Disono.
A live feed taken from a CCTV footage posted in the social media page of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Pilar
showed uniformed policemen maneuvering in front of the residence of Vice Mayor Disono and the person who posted the live feed plead for help from the authorities, claiming they were “ambushed” by policemen.
Disono has admitted the armed men were members of her convoy that passed the checkpoint. According to her, they were on their way home when police let the vehicle she was on pass, but stopped the vehicle of her aides.
They reportedly heard gunshots prompting them to speed home.
Police later on found a certain Sandee Boy Bermudo dead from the van of the vice mayor’s aides and a Stribog SP9A3 rifle named after the vice mayor.
