KAPANGAN, Benguet
Action returned in the Cong. Eric Go Yap Congressional Cup in this town northwest of La Trinidad after more than a week of stoppage of games either due to typhoons or lack of available venue. More, locals will get to see their women’s volleyball team go up against visiting teams in the Benguet Women’s Volleyball League component of the Yap Cup on Sunday in a five- game schedule. Kapangan’s basketball squad behind the troika of Rudolf Eilinger-Ferdinand Sapalong-Fenrie Atinyao is going for the team’s third win in the 13-team field.
Kapangan last played at home last October 29, where it survived a tough Bakun in a 104-92 victory that does not
reflect the struggle it went through. Kapangan actually fought from 12 points down early in the first canto, lose a 17-point advantage that was reduced to a mere four points in a third quarter Bakun rampage led by Ryan Contada.
“They really need to work things up, not fall into a hole where they climb out of, fall into it again and hopefully regain
their feet. What is alarming is that many are not the young anymore,’ said coach Euristy Canuto, who will host Buguias in the last game on November 9.
It was sort of a boon from mayor Manny Fermin after watching his squad scramble for the win that he took the cudgel of hosting the weekend games. The Media for Sports Development found no available playing venue due to the Adivay Festival where most gyms are unavailable. “Go talk to coach Euristy,” Fermin told commissioner Roderick Osis during the dinner the other Tuesday which he hosted at his office. Canuto is also the town’s sports coordinator. Atok returns to action after losing its opener against Tublay last October 17. It will be the second game for the team that upset Tuba last year as Kurt Tamiray hopes to take full advantage of newcomer Oshwald Matias’s presence.
The two makie a 1-2 punch for the squad from the coldest place in Benguet. Osis said that due to cancellations of games, Atok’s scheduled games were postponed that while most teams have finished their third or fourth game, Atok has only one completed game. Itogon goes for its third win in a game against Bakun, even as defending champion goes for the same in its match against winless Mankayan. Kabayan seeks its second win after a Kapangan victory when it faces a Kibungan side that is beefed up by two cops – Romel Lavandia and John Paul Juralbal.
On Sunday, it will be winless Atok and Tublay in the curtain raiser, Itogon goes for its third win against Bokod,
Mankayan opposite Bakun. Tuba seeks a third win against Kibungan and Edralyn Mangantulao and company, the
Gov. Cup bridesmaid, against the last minute entry Kabayan.
