MAYOR DEPUTIZES 110 NEW SMOKE-FREE ENFORCERS

BAGUIO CITY

Mayor Benjamin Magalong deputized a new batch of Smoke-Free Baguio enforcers to implement Ordinance No. 34 2017 or the Smoke-Free Baguio Ordinance. This was by virtue of Executive Order No. 96 series of 2024 issued by the mayor last Sept. 19, 2024. The mayor who also serves as chairman of the Smoke-Free Baguio Task Force said the latest batch of deputized enforcers is composed of barangay officials, tanods, security personnel and city government employees.

They earned the deputation after completing the two-day training program conducted by the task force on August 29-30 and September 4-5. By virtue of their deputation, the enforcers can apprehend violators of the Smoke-Free ordinance which prohibits the use, sale, distribution and advertisement of cigarettes and other tobacco products including vape products in public utility vehicles, government-owned vehicles (mobile and stationary), accommodation and entertainment establishments, public buildings, public places, enclosed public places or any enclosed areas outside one’s private residence or private place of work except in duly designated smoking areas duly approved and fully compliant with the requirements.

They will work under the supervision of the task force. “Deputized persons will play a crucial role in reinforcing the implementation of the ordinance with the primary goal of safeguarding the health and well-being of all residents by minimizing the negative impacts of smoking, tobacco use and vaping,” the mayor noted in the order. He said the city continues to pursue its thrust of “reducing exposure to tobacco and vape marketing and advertising, limiting access to tobacco and vape products and offering assistance and supportive atmosphere to help tobacco and vape users quit” the vice. Violators of the ordinance are fined P1,000 while establishments are liable to pay P2,000 on first offense. Persons who are unable to pay the fine may opt to conduct community service instead.
