Patatas pang-‘french fries’ dadami sa P77-M pag-aaral

Umaasang itataas ng rehiyong Cordillera kahit sa 25 porsiyento ang produksiyon ng binhi ng uri ng patatas sa pagproseso at mas maraming suplay ng patatas para sa “french fries” na pangagailangan ng mga food chains.
“The research is a three-year project which, when completed, will increase the volume of quality seeds by 25 percent and eventually improve the yield of the processing potato variety by 25 percent,” pahayag ni Dr. Nancy Bantog, regional director ng Cordillera-Department of Science and Technology (DOST), sa isang panayam.
Sinabi ni Bantog na ang Benguet State University at Northern Philippines Root Crops Research and Training Center (NPRCRTC) ay humihiling ng isang institutional grant support sa ilalim ng NICER (Niche Centers in the Regions) facility ng DOST na nagkakahalaga ng P77.7 milyon.
Ang pag-aaral ay itataas ang uri ng potato research and development facilities at pahuhusayin ang kapasidad at kapabilidad nito na magsagawa ng mas advance na research, development at innovations bilang suporta sa produksiyon ng de-kalidad na potato seed tubers para sa industriya.
Ayon pa kay Bantog ang 86 porsiyento ng produksiyon ng patatas sa bansa ay mula sa rehiyon na nakitang bumababa dahil sa mga problema sa availability at halaga ng de-kalidad na potato tubers.
Sinabi niya na ang pagbaba ng available seedlings ay humantong sa average annual importation na 243,304 metric tons ng patatas para makamit ang domestic demand.
“The establishment of a Niche center on potato research and development at BSU will significantly improve the region’s potato industry, contributing not only to increased incomes of local farmers, but also to national development through savings in foreign exchange as a result of reduced importation of potatoes,” ani Bantog.
Ang NICER facility sa ilalim ng Science for Change (S4C) program ay magbibigay ng institutional grants sa academic institutions para sa mga proyektong may kinalaman sa collaborative research and development sa basic commodities ng rehiyon.
Idineklarang isa ang patatas sa mga top agricultural product ng Cordillera.
Pangunahing tutukan ng pag-aaral ang produksiyon ng seedlings para sa uri ng patatas para sa pagproseso – ang uri na ito ang ginagamit sa ‘french fries’. Ang karaniwang uri na ginagamit sa pagluluto ay ang “table potato” variety na hindi akma para sa French fries dahil sa mabasang kalidad nito.
Sa ngayon ayon kay Bantog ay nakakapag-produce lamang ang Cordillera ng 17 porsiyento ng “processing” variety kung saan umaasang tutugunan ng pag-aaral na itataas ang suplay ng de-kalidad na binhi at pahuhusayin ang ani para sa pangangailan sa french fries.
Sinabi ni Bantog na nakakapagbigay lamang ang rehiyon ng “table” potato variety at hindi pa ang pangangailangan para sa french fries subalit ayon sa kaniya dahil sa pag-aaral ay umaasa ang Cordillera na makuha ang bahagi sa merkado ng “processing” variety na malaki ring industriya.
Dagdag pa ni Bantog na ang tatlong-taon na proyekto ay may limang bahagi, “biotech-assisted methods in nurturing the quality of potato seed production; enhancing micro propagation system of true or type potato varieties; application of improved cultivation system to enhanced foundation seed production; increasing productivity and quality seeds through the improved storage interventions; and operationalizing the formal seed production system.”
“The overall goal of the project is to enhance quality potato seed production through application of advanced science and technology intervention that will increase the processing potato,” ani Bantog.
“We are targeting to supply the seedling requirement and increase the currently 15 tons per hectare yield to 20 tons,” dagdag niya.
