Probe sought over Ilocano OFW’s death in Hawaii

LAOAG CITY, ILOCOS NORTE – An investigation is being sought into the case of the 47-year-old overseas Filipino worker Marcelino Devis who was killed in a hit-and-run incident in Hawaii.
Governor Imee Marcos on March 16 urged authorities to immediately and properly investigate the death of Devis, whose remains had arrived at the Laoag International Airport on March 14.
Devis’s remains were transported by his family to Santa Maria town in Ilocos Sur. He suffered multiple fractures in his neck and skull, according to his son Mark.
“Justice needs to be served,” said Governor Marcos, “there has to be an investigation, justice, and equity.”
Ilocos Norte holds the most number of OFWs in the country, hence the governor’s prioritization of their welfare and simultaneous initiatives for rural development and other forms of economic growth in the province to eliminate the idea that moving or working abroad is the sole chance for financial stability among Ilocano families.
“Kailangang tignan kung ano ang naitulong ng ating embahada sa ating kababayan,” she said.
Governor Marcos also strongly supports the intention of President Rodrigo Duterte to create a national agency catering specifically to OFWs and their families. Ace Alegre / ABN
