Educator's Corner
“THE BEST COACHES IN LIFE IS FOUND INSIDE THE CLASSROOM” THE TEACHER, OUR TEACHERS. According to Quinn Simpson in her book” When Teachers Act as Coaches”, states that when a teacher adopts a coaching approach provides the opportunity for a radically different education system taking the best of the past into the future. She also stated that if we want to move education forward, we may in fact need to reconnect with one of its oldest traditions: Teachers who Coach.
Furthermore, teachers are essential part of the learning process. They foster change and equip learners with the necessary skill to survive the real world. Same is through with a coach. He has to train his players to survive the competent world of sport and equip his athletes with the necessary skills to overcome and win the race of their game. But in doing such they also need to be the source of motivation and inspiration. And while a coach leads their team to win games and tournaments, a teacher leads their students to win life.
According to NATHAN BARBER author of “WHAT TEACHERS CAN LEARN FROM SPORTS COACHES” and why teachers can be a great coach and how a coach can be a great teacher.
- Encourage Failure as a stepping stone to do better: The best teachers encourage the person but not the failure, and they don’t harshly penalize students for making mistakes. Instead, they evaluate what the students did wrong and move on with the next play.
- Acknowledge Individual’s Progress: On the field, coaches praise athletes for reaching their fullest potential. As classroom teacher we give appreciation, awards compliments to students. Giving appreciation boosts confidence of individual.
- Affirm the Power of Hard Work: Great coaches help players see real improvement. In the classroom, teachers provide students with analogous goals and measurements for progress to encourage (rather than discourage) continued growth.
- Affirm the Power of Teamwork: On the playing field, no matter how talented an athlete is, victory is impossible without teamwork. The best coaches cultivate productive relationships,. More still, the entire team is only as strong as its weakest player, and it’s the job of that team to help that individual improve.
- Teach the Value of Struggle: Not everyday that they will experience easy tasks in life.Teaching them how to struggle develops their attitude of not giving up. Individuals like athletes and students who do not value struggle tend to cheat in the future.
- Teach them the value of Appreciation: Losing a life’s battle is a part of it and in this great trial, we teach every athlete to accept and appreciate whatever outcome they will be getting at the end of the day, and that is the value of SPORTSMANSHIP. Learning from failing is a great lesson. HAPPY TEACHERS MONTH!
