2019 urban farm youth convention concluded

BAGUIO CITY – Youthful 4H farmer-members proved their mettle in different agriculture-based competitions during the recently concluded urban farm convention themed “BIDA 4H: Bringing Innovation and Development in Agriculture through 4H (head, heart, hands, health) club” on April 11 and 12 here.
The event was spearheaded by the Agriculture Division of the City Veterinary Office, led by City Agriculturist Alberto Tomas, and participated in by at least fifty students and pupils from different high school and elementary schools in the city.
Rochelle Joseph of Lindawan National High School (LNHS) bested Denzel Ford Bala-oy of San Vicente National High School (SVNHS) and Jovy Paddit of Fort del Pilar Elementary School (FDPES) in
spoken poetry with her “Taguan” piece.
Grace Pecdasen of Pinget National High School (PNHS) garnered the top prize for the on-the-spot canvass painting, with the surrounding mountains of Tuba, Benguet as her piece.
The painting’s symbolism and colors were well-explained as with the 4H logo, a requirement of the contest. Jake Bocawe (LNHS) and Dixie Diano of Happy Hallow National High School (HHNHS) won second and third prizes, respectively.
Yasha Mae Ananayo (HHNHS) won first place in the quiz bee, followed by Dhanica Gwen Carimpal (LNHS) and Lychere Faith Pingi of Sto. Tomas Elementary School in second and third places, respectively.
The quiz focused on basic information of agricultural practices and biological sciences. For Himig Handog (songwriting and singing contest), a melodic music-box sing-along well rehearsed and delivered by petite Jura Eslao of Pinget Elementary School won first place with a P2,000 cash prize.
Lance Esteban (LNHS) and Conrad Cyril Vizcaya (FDPES) who rendered English/Filipino pop and country music in their original compositions won second and third places, respectively.
Solen Lindaoan of the University of Baguio and Jeanette Esteban (LNHS) were the first and second place winners, respectively, in the Cacao-based food processing and technology contest.
“Pasalubong” products were produced on site from dried and semi-processed cacao as main ingredient.
They were judged according to proper attire and the necessary personal protective equipment within the three-hour processing period.
The products were also judged as to appearance, texture, taste and presentation.
Ceejay Ramos (LNHS), Kristine Emerald Dangpa (HHNHS), and Jambe Aliwana won first, second and third prizes, respectively, and with corresponding cash prizes in the Terrarium contest.
The Terrarium (glass gardening) contest was completed in a span of two hours, and was judged according to creativity and artistry; visual impact; economic value; safety work habit; quality; and durability.
A small-mouth bottle was utilized with materials provided by the participants.
Judges for the occasion included City Agriculturist Tomas; Regional Agriculture and Fisheries Council Chair Balbina Ernesto; and a representative from Dep-Ed.
The two-day youth convention included a visit to the Korean Greenhouse Technology at the Department of Agriculture Bureau of Plant Industry in Guisad.
The contest winners will represent the city in the 4H club regional level competitions next month.
Mayor Mauricio Domogan and Council committee on Market, Trade and Commerce and Agriculture chair Leandro Yangot spoke during the event.
