BANGUED, ABRA – Abra is starting strong on cacao growing to stir up a new venture for its farmers.
Established in 2014 with the help of technicians all the way from the Department of Trade and Industry-Davao and Cacao Industry Development Association of Mindanao (CIDAMI), several cacao growers have already sprouted in the province with their center in Bucay town, the cacao tablea-identified producer in the province.
Now, DTI-Abra and the Bucay LGU are assisting cacao processors to enhance their products introducing state of the art packaging, labeling and product-testing.
We have started making chocolates (in 2018), said Abra Governor Ma. Jocelyn Bernos. We now offer our own cacao tablea (in pure, with milk, with muscovado), she added.
The Bucay Cacao Industry Cluster Committee (BCICC) spearheads the execution for the transformation of cacao farmers and communities, ushering big developments in Abra.
Banglolao village in Bucay has already four registered processors of cacao tablea products–Banglolao Women’s Association, Norma’s Homemade Cacao Tablea, Catalina de la Paz, and Monica Bermudez.
Already, cacao tablea products are available within Bucay, in big grocery stores in Bangued, Abra’s capital and at the two Abra Pasalubong Centers in Bangued and Tangadan in San Quintin town.
DTI, Bucay LGU and the provincial government are aggressively promoting the cacao-based products through various trade fairs in and outside Abra as tokens to visitors.
Mike Bersamira, Abra provincial administrator said they are continuously searching for improvements of their cacao tablea product’s packaging and labeling in order to meet international quality standards.
