DEWATS in full bloom in BDH

BACNOTAN, La Union – Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH) has launched the enhancement made to its Decentralized Waste water Treatment Facility (DEWATS) on April 30, 2019.
“Through enhancing this facility, our hospital is fulfilling its duty of becoming a good steward of Planet Earth and at the same time creating ways for our patients to appreciate the beauty of nature,” said Dr. Zenserly D. Pagaduan, Chief of BDH. BDH personnel especially the Pollution Control Committee worked together by planting flowering plants like the Bandera Española (Canna generalis) which is always in continuous bloom.
According to Dr. Raul Sagun, chairman of said committee, this plant variety which is planted in the Plant Gravel Facility (PGF) part of the DEWATS, is very efficient in remediating nitrogen contaminants and fairly effective in removing phosphorus and total suspended particles in wastewater.
Together with gravel, it also facilitates in filtering wastewater. He said that the suitability of this plant in wetlands gives its importance in ecological wastewater treatment technology.
Wastewater generated from hospitals is a form of domestic wastewater which includes materials disposed of through toilets, sinks, showers, washing machines and the like.
It must be treated first before its release to the environment to prevent harm to public health and avoid negative impact on the environment. BDH is the second beneficiary of DEWATS for hospitals project in the province of La Union. Melanie Holt
