Making a Difference

Baguio City dominated the 2019 Cordillera Administrative Region Athletic Association (CARAA) meet with 205 gold medals, 110 silver and 79 bronze.

I would say that the success of the event was due to the collective efforts of everyone who made contributions with a big heart.

Every effort, whether large or small, made a difference. Some athletes experienced a deal of discomfort because of certain adjustments, like having to cope with the climate.

A few athletes became weak due to diarrhea and gastroenteritis. As a member of the management team, it was our responsibility to seek ways to contribute for the better or to at least ease the given situation.

Very often, we were too indulged to do what was assigned to us. I was attending to weak delegates and colleagues more than what my committee, the Clean and Green was supposedly doing.

It became an unintentional responsibility to be endorsing delegates and colleagues to health professionals.

I know the small deeds made a difference. I discerned that it had lasting effect rather than temporary especially to the athletes and coaches who were given special attention.

Those efforts did not make us complain. We made it a point to act as encouragers. Instead of complaining, we chose to make the time more productive by helping ease their pain.

We volunteered to tidy up the quarters, clean the comfort rooms, run errands and recycle garbage. When I was doing all these, I came to appreciate the work of our janitors and those who do blue collared jobs.

I also felt so blessed to hold a managerial position. Other than making a difference, we should seek to influence others.

It was a sad reality that only a few did the tasks assigned to them, however it has made me believe that the best way to convince and inspire others is to lead by example.

I really did my task with positive attitude. On a biblical point of view, Jesus Christ is a model of servant leadership. He was also a great teacher and master of all times.

He once washed the feet of His disciples. What Jesus had shown and taught reminded me of selfless service—that we should always put the needs of others before our own.

If we want to be winning leaders, we’ve got to make a difference that will inspire, lead and motivate others.
