Podium car parking in several areas in the city pushed

With the realization that the City of Baguio has been recording the highest number of visitors or travelers every twenty four hours (24), based on the report and census of the Department of Tourism –Cordillera Administrative Region (DOT-CAR), three lawmakers in the city has filed a resolution to request for the construction of a podium car parking in the City of Baguio particularly in the areas of Ganza, between the orchidarium and children’s park at the Burnham Park, at the former Pantranco site and the whole stretch of the City Library.

In their proposed measure, City Councilors Benny Bomogao, Michael Lawana and Faustino Olowan, Chairperson and members respectively of the Committee on Public Utility, Transportation and Traffic Legislation, observed that while the city has seen a tremendous increase in the number of visitors this has also revealed the woefully inadequate parking areas available for parking. It was further pointed out in the proposal that the city has become the central jump off point for both local and foreign tourists who would desire to travel further North in the Cordilleras, and that the city is continuously promoting its tourism, business sector investment and celebrates various big events such as the Panagbenga, the Philippine Military Graduation (PMA), the Cordillera Day, the CARAA and other large events that cater to throngs of crowds.

The aldermen then noted that the challenge now facing the city government of Baguio are the issues encountered by the numerous visitors to the city particularly on the lack of adequate parking spaces for their motor vehicles. They then suggested that a Podium Car Parking is a necessity that will address the issues of adequate parking areas as well as on illegal parking.
The construction of a Podium Car Parking has been recommended in certain suitable areas of the city such as at the Ganza area, between the Children’s Park and the Orchidarium, at the former Pantranco terminal and at the whole stretch of the City Library. The proposed resolution also recommended that the City Library will be replaced thru the construction of a new building.

A Podium Car Parking as revealed by the proposed resolution is also known as a multi-story car park consisting of a parking garage, parking ramp and parking deck and is a building specifically designed for car parking and is essentially a stacked car park.

As further observed by the authors of the proposed measure the benefits for several Podium Car Parking in the city will be a reduction in the number of illegally parked vehicles along the roads particularly in the Central Business District area, a decent parking area for motor vehicles, additional income for the city due to the parking fees to be collected, and a suitable accommodation area for parking motor vehicles within the city.

Finally, as estimated by the said legislators the proposed Car Podium Parking would be able to accommodate at least five hundred motor vehicles for five floors of one building alone.
