HUGE LA UNION FIRE SENDS OVER TWO DOZEN HOMELESS FAMILIES

BAUANG, LA UNION – Over two dozen families went homeless Wednesday night after a freak fire broke out in barangay Paringao, Bauang town in La Union.
According to the Bauang Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office (MSWDO), the total number of affected individuals totaled to
85 as 25 houses were burned.
At least 14 families took refuge at the Paringao Elementary School while others were taken in by their relatives when a family was temporarily taken at the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Office (MDRRMO).
According to the Bauang LGU, the fire started at around 7:00 PM and rapidly spread out as most of the houses were made up of light materials. Firefighters had a hard time passing through the narrow village passageways leading to the burning houses. Firefighters from neighboring towns also rushed in to help put out the raging fire.
The Office of Second District lawmaker Dante Garcia, which initially shelled out relief goods, blankets, and sleeping mats to families, is working out additional emergency assistance from the regional offices of the social welfare department in Region 1.
While the Bauang town and La Union provincial government which initially handed out immediate assistance to the victims are also coordinating donation efforts.
