Baguio sports development pushed

BAGUIO CITY – Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong on Thursday, July 18, 2019 said the city’s sports program will get a push by enhancing the development of Athletic Bowl.

“We have to enhance the development of Athletic Bowl, definitely we have a plan for it,” Mayor Magalong said during his first press forum “Ugnayan” held at the city multi-purpose hall.

Among his plans is to “established ownership” of some sports facilities like the Baguio Tennis court, operated by a private sports club and the area presently occupied by a unit of the army reserved command.

Magalong is also looking into the potential of the basketball courts to be utilized as night market paving the way of the possible transfer of the dozens of “ukay-ukay” stalls along Harrison road, another way of easing traffic flow.

He also revealed plans to improve the bike/race area into another potential use. Aside from improving sports facilities, Magalong stressed that he would like to focus more on combative sports.

Records showed that local athletes who are into combative sports like karate, arnis, judo, taekwondo and boxing have been consistently giving pride and honor to the city by hauling medals in both national and international sports conclaves.

Magalong vowed to work in increasing the budget allocated for the city’s sports program and development. He also promised to give additional financial incentives to athletes and coaches.

City records showed that the City Sports and Recreation Office got a total allocation of P27.424-million budget out of the city’s total budget of P2.179-billion for 2019.

As this developed, Magalong revealed that the city is working double time in organizing the first Baguio City Sports Olympics.
