BGO P50 per head of chicken sold in Benguet

LA TRINIDAD, Benguet – Live chicken at PHP50 per head aside from other low-priced food items were sold on Wednesday at the provincial cold chain facility, here for residents of this capital town.

This is the fourth “Manok na Puti 50 pesos only” activity of vice governor Johnny Waguis in partnership with Benguet Caretaker and ACTCIS Representative Eric Go Yap. Residents started to line up as early as 6:00 a.m. to get a chance to buy from the 4,000 heads of live chicken sold at PHP50 apiece; 2,000 pieces of dressed chicken at PHP75 a kilo aside from the locally produced baguio beans at PHP25 a kilo; big potatoes at PHP50 a kilo; small potatoes at PHP27 a kilo; pipino at PHP12 a kilo; bell pepper at PHP20 a kilo and the squash at PHP15 a kilo which
was bartered by Waguis from the municipality of Kayapa in Nueva Vizcaya.

The food items sold at cheaper cost came after the “Sampung piso para sa farmers” activity where all vegetables were sold at PHP10 a kilo.

Both activities, Waguis said, are hitting to problems – farmers losing due to lack of buyers and residents being provided with cheap food items.

The vice governor said they have brought both activities to the different towns of the province while the PHP50 chicken is hoped to be brought to all the towns after finishing with Bakun, Kapangan, Kibungan and Tublay. Itogon and Tuba towns are the next stops of the cheap chicken within the week.

Waguis said in partnership with Congressman Yap, they buy the chicken at PHP75 per head and subsidized the PHP25 so that they can sell to the residents at only PHP50.

“Binili natin at PHP75 per head, yung PHP50 ang babayaran ng mga kababayan natin tapos PHP25 ito yung pinaghatin namin ni Congressman caretaker Eric Go Yap at office ko na sasagutin natin.”

He said there are also other donors which he said are being added to what they are subsidizing. He said that the selling of chicken is added with the selling of vegetables which they directly buy from the farmers in the provinces.

“Marami pang iba na nagrerequest. Hopefully madala natin sa ibang lugar (There are others who are also requesting, we hope to bring this to other places),” Waguis said.

He said that isntead of the canned items which are usually the content of relief food packs, the PHP10 per kilo of vegetables and the cheap chicken are good alternatives.

“We thought of this because there are others asking if we can also give meat and chicken is the most affordable,” Waguis added.

“Lilay”, a resident of barangay Cruz said “malaki ang benepisyo nito. Bukod sa nakakatipid tayo, sigurado na ang binibili natin ay maganda ang quality (there are big benefits to this.

Aside from savings, we are assured that what we are buying are of good quality),” she said while carrying her bags filled with vegetables as well as dressed and the two live chickens.

Lilay said that at groceries, chicken cost PHP140 to PHP150 a kilo which is double the price of what she was able to buy. She spent PHP639 for the assorted vegetables; four pieces dressed chicken and live chicken.

“I’ll make a soup out of this chicken so that we can save. This will last us for weeks because there are only three of us in the house,” Lilay added. (PNA)

LIVE CHICKEN AT P50. Live chicken sold at P50 per head and dressed chicken at P75 a kilo are sold to residents of La Trinidad on Wednesday at the cold chain facility of the province.

The selling of cheap food items is an initiative of Vice governor Johnny Waguis and in partnership with Benguet caretaker and ACT-CIS congressman Eric Go Yap.

The activity is an offshoot of an earlier activity that was brought to the different towns where vegetables were sold at P10 a kilo- benefiting the farmers with a ready market and the public able to buy cheap nutritious food.
