CLIMATE CHANGE SUMMIT ON FEB. 9 AND 22

BAGUIO CITY

With the theme, “Sama-samang Tumutugon Sa Hamon ng Nagbabagong Klima,” the local government of Baguio conducts a Climate Change summit on Feb. 9, and 22; with limited audience at the Baguio Cultural and Convention Center. A hundred (100) individuals from the Baguio Climate Change Committee and other stakeholders shall attend the whole-day forum/workshop
on Feb. 9, while 100 individuals from the barangays, civil society organizations and youth groups shall have the same assembly on Feb. 22.

The program will be livestreamed online, thus could reach more office audience or stay-at-home individuals, according to City Environment and Parks Management Office (CEPMO) Assistant Head Engr. Marivic Empizo. Interaction may also be done online. Mayor Benjamin Magalong delivers the keynote message for the summit. This endeavor is part of his 7-point core agenda as expressed last October including Environment, Land use and energy, Climate and Disaster Resilience, Urban Regeneration, Youth Empowerment, Economic Development, and
Competitiveness.

The mayor also chairs the climate change council with members from the Local Government Unit, GOCC, Private Sector, Academe, Nongovernment organization. The overview of climate change shall be delivered by the representative from the Environmental Management Board (EMB-CAR) while the Baguio Local Climate Change Action Plan (BLCCAP) shall be presented by CEPMO head
Atty. Rhenan Diwas, including salient provisions of the city’s environmental code. Speaker-representatives from the transport, electricity, water and waste disposal bodies are from the Department of Transportation (DOTr), Benguet Electric Cooperative (BENECO), the Baguio Water
District (BWD), and the Zero Waste Baguio group, respectively.

Councilor Betty Lourdes Tabanda presents the city’s legislative support and initiatives for environmental programs with City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO) head
Antonette Anaban presents the report on Resilient Cities. The summit aims to promote awareness including the implementation of interrelated programs; as stakeholder-led to help decrease the effects of climate change. Adaptation and mitigation action shall also be discussed, as with inputs of
practices to reduce greenhouse gas emission. A synthesis of the presentations and inputs shall
be presented at the end of the forum; to establish the needed action and ways forward, between and among all stakeholders.
