DOH reminds on ways to prevent kidney diseases

SAN FERNANDO CITY – “Better to start educating kids on living a healthy lifestyle to prevent them from experiencing kidney problems later on,” Department of Health (DOH) Region 1 Non- Communicable Diseases Unit chief and medical health officer IV Herminigilda Salangad said on Monday, June 24, 2019 in observation of National Kidney Month.
“Most often, children do not take sufficient volume of water or delay urinating especially when they are busy playing or with any other activity,” Salangad added.
She also said that some are not physically active especially if focused on playing with their gadgets. She encouraged parents to teach their children to live healthy from early age to prevent kidney diseases.
“Kidney diseases are common among patients with diabetes, hypertension, unhealthy lifestyle, and poor diet,” Salangad said.
Kidneys are important body organs that help the body pass waste as urine, maintain overall fluid balance, filter waste materials from food, medications, and toxic substances and regulate blood pressure.
“To prevent kidney diseases, proper hygiene, sufficient water intake, and avoidance to salty and sweet foods are very important, especially for those with family history,” Salangad said.
She also said that undergoing urinalysis is the fastest and the most basic test to check for possible kidney infection and that it is still best to consult and seek medical help to prevent further complications if one has kidney problems.
“Sa Malusog na Bato, Bukas ay Sigurado” is the theme for this year’s National Kidney Month.
