SM Baguio donates over 3,000 books to public schools

SM City Baguio’s annual Donate-A-Book program which ran from May 20 to July 15 this year had accumulated over 3,000 books, and which were recently donated to six schools or to some 1,300 students in Benguet Province. These books were collected from customers who generously shared textbooks, storybooks, and novels through the SM Share a Movement book campaign.

The books were donated to Besong-Saddle Elementary School; Kabuyao Elementary School; Gilbert Semon Elementary School; Batuan Elementary School; Asin Elementary School; and Tuba National High School. SM will soon donate some books to Tabu Elementary School and Itogon Gold Elementary School within the week.

Kabuyao Elementary School Teacher-in-Charge Catherine Willy said, “Malaking tulong yung books para maenganyo yung mga bata magbasa especially with pictures.”

She also mentioned that the transition of K-12 program made it difficult for them to use the older books they had for their lessons. The donated books will be used as additional reference materials for the students’ research projects.

Also, the activities within the books can help the teachers come up with new ideas to include in the student’s classroom activity or seat work.

“The books are very helpful especially yung story books,” Kabuyao Elementary School Grade 6 teacher Rona Lea Kitan said.

They hope that the donated books will further encourage the students to read in order to increase their English reading comprehension and their vocabulary.

Tuba National High School Principal II Flora Tubal said, “Kulang yung reading materials namin and we don’t have internet access here, the school really need the books.”

Tubal also added that the books could help the high school students with their research and their transition to college through advanced reading, since internet connection is difficult in their area.

The Donate-a-Book Program is an annual project by SM that takes place before the start of school. This is a perfect opportunity to give away books from the past years and get a discount coupon when you buy new school supplies.

SM shoppers can share the gift of knowledge through the SM Store’s Share Movement: Donate-A-Book campaign in all branches nationwide.

The SM Share Movement Donate-a-Book campaign is part of The SM Store’s quarterly donation drives- wherein it collects shoes, books, toys, and hygiene kits for identified unprivileged communities, including those impacted by calamities.
