6 SLU med graduates among physician board exams top takers

Six graduates of Saint Louis University’s medical school were among the top 10 passers of the 2021 Physician Licensure examination held earlier this month where the biggest university north of Manila is again one of the top performing schools and one of the successful examinees is a former volleyball standout who represented the city in national meets including the semiprofessional Shakey’s VLeague and now the latest in a family of doctors.
Niño Pimentel Emocling placed third in the September 2021 board exams after garnering an 87.58 percent to lead all SLU trained physicians who is followed by Justine Mae Manaois Gervero on the 4th spot after garnering an 87.08 percent passing mark.
Placing sixth in the board exams is Patricia Ann Sayson Franco, who garnered a rating of 86.92 percent.
Three Louisians occupied the eighth to 10th spots with Lee-Anne Velasco Sanglay (86.33 percent); Raenald Pascual Julian (86.25 percent);
and Brylle Domerson Mendoza Turalba (86.17 percent) in the SLU-stacked top 10.
SLU is third best performing school with a 90.60 percent passing rate. Meanwhile, former SLU volleyball ace Anna Colleen Rossi joins father Henry and sister Erin, also a former volleyball varsity player for the University of the Philippines – Baguio, in the medical profession after passing the September licensure exams.
Rossi was a key member of the 2012 SLU Lady Navigators team which came from behind to beat University of the Cordilleras in five sets in the third game of their best of three finals and where she was named as most valuable player by the TCS Magazine.
The Phases Learning Center alum who was part of Team Cordillera in the Palarong Pambansa until 2011 and was also a member of Team Baguio in the Shakey’s V-League.
During the 2013 National Inter-Collegiate Volleyball Championship, or the Pedro Mendoza Cup, she ferried to Manila to play in a game then travelled back to Baguio after the game just to lead the Lady Navigators against a Manila squad.
It was also a difficult year for the new doctors who finished their clerkship, fourth year, just when the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country and life made difficult due to the enhanced community quarantine.
Still, the 2021 graduates persisted and held their somber graduation rites May last year and start their internship as some of the volunteer medical frontline workers leading to their taking of the examinations earlier this month.
Rossi was also one of the five most outstanding interns from the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center for 2021 along with fellow SLU alums Hubert Pena, Petricia Yu, Rhetzel Marc Pascual and Aira Rhemer Cala-or.
The results of the licensure exams, held in Baguio, Cagayan De Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Legazpi, Lucena, Tacloban and Zamboanga, were announced by the Professional Regulation Commission on Friday.
Last April 30, SLU was took top spot among 55 schools in the r 2021 Pharmacist Licensure Examinations.
This came after all of its 16 graduates passed the board exams or a 100 percent passing mark. The Cebu Doctors University came in second with 16 of its 17 alums passing or 94.12 percent passing mark, followed by Lyceum Northwestern University of Dagupan City with 92.86 percent after 13 of its 14 graduates passing.
At fourth spot was Southwestern University with 50 of 56 graduates passing (89.29 percent). University of Santo Tomas was fifth (10 of 12 or 83.33 percent), followed by Liceo de Cagayan University (55 of 67 or 82.09 percent) and at seventh was Fellowship Baptist College (13 of 16 or 81.25 percent.
Also this year, SLU graduates swamped the Mechanical Engineering board examinations with seven of its graduates finishing among the top 10 including the board’s number one.
