Baguio braces for ‘Ambo’ amid Covid-19 threat

BAGUIO CITY – Mayor Benjamin Magalong has advised residents to brace for typhoon Ambo (international name Vongfong), which lashed the southern part of the country since it made landfall Thursday.

Magalong told residents not to set aside precautions against the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) even as they prepare for the typhoon.

As of 8 p.m. Thursday, the Cordillera Administrative Region has lbeen placed under tropical cyclone wind signal no. 1.

Magalong has directed the City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (CDRRMC) to put in place contingency measures for the typhoon as early as Thursday.

Its operations center will be open 24 hours to monitor the typhoon and respond to incidents.

In cases of cut lines, fallen electric posts and similar incidents, the public may call the CDRRMC operations center as well as the Benguet Electric Cooperative Inc. at hotlines 442-2295 and 442-6663.

Ambo is the first typhoon to hit the country this year.

Magalong said the city, which will shift to general community quarantine (GCQ) from an enhanced community quarantine starting May 16, is ready to ease up on some restrictions primarily on the construction sector to prepare the city for the rainy season.

“We have already mobilized constructions to make repairs on key infrastructures in preparation for the rainy season as early as two weeks ago,” Magalong said during the Ugnayan at the City Session Hall last Wednesday. (PNA)
