Covid19 Cases Spike Feared In Baguio During Summer

BAGUIO CITY (May 8, 2021)— The Baguio City Health Services Office (HSO) is anticipating the possible rise of Corona Virus Disease (Covid 19) here during summer.
Baguio City Health Officer Dr. Rowena Galpo said, after a downward trend of positive cases, they will be expecting a rise on the number of individuals hit by the virus with the gradual opening up of the city for tourists from San Fernando City, La Union.
The city earlier saw a low number of positive cases during the last agressive mass testing here.
Galpo said they are expecting a swarming of tourists this time of the year, being the “summer capital” of the country.   She said that even though the number of tourist arrival is much lesser than before the pandemic, still, tourist influx will add up to the mobility of people in the city.
On Friday, the City governments of Baguio and San Fernando, La Union agreed to open up for  a tourism bubble wherein tourists from these two are allowed to visit the two places. The tourists will use common protocols and health standard requirements.
As of 6:00 PM of May 7, 2021, the city has 73 new cases bringing the total to 11, 076.  There were three deaths adding up to the 223 Covid-related deaths.  There is also a total of 9,864 recoveries.
Meanwhile, Galpo noted a rise of adolescent births for the past several years here.  She said adolescent and teen pregnancies increased from 21.93 percent in 2019 to 24.9 percent last year compared to the target of less than 37 per 1,000 females aged five to 19 years old.
She assured, however, that much has been done in this service area and her office continues to work with other departments and agencies including on parental care.   “This steady collaboration will surely improve the health concerns of the city’s adolescents and youth,” she stressed.
