KALINGA DISTRICT JAIL RECOGNIZED AS BEST DISTRICT JAIL FOR Q1 2024

The Kalinga District Jail and some personnel were recognized for exemplary performance by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-Cordillera (BJMPCAR). The Kalinga District Jail headed by JSenior Inspector John S. Melecio was named the Best District Jail in the region for the first quarter of 2024 during the Regional Gawad
Penolohiya on April 1, 2024 in Baguio City. The jail facility was also cited for having the Most Organized Health Service Unit and the Best Special Tactics and Response (STAR) team in the Type B jail category for the same period.

The Kalinga District Jail also received recognition for Best Escorting Unit for the fourth quarter of 2023. Some personnel were also recognized for outstanding performance in the first quarter of 2024, namely; Jail Officer (JO) 1 Nero A. Agwilang – Best Custodial Officer; JO1 Adrian D. Gulayan – Best Searcher; JO1 Joel M. Arnold – Best Searcher; SJO3 Jeafe B. Dulliyao – Best Help Desk Officer; JO1 Caesar P. Cadwising Jr. – Best Gate Keeper; JO2 Jose C. Wing-nga Jr. – Best Escorting Officer, and JO1 Brenth B. Cabanban – Best Records Officer.

Insp. Oliver Alimani attributed the recognitions to Kalinga District Jail’s accomplishments in upholding the welfare of the 130 Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) under its wing. Alimani shared that PDLs are provided with livelihood activities such as broom-making and basket-weaving, allowing them to learn a trade and earn a wage. As part of their rehabilitation, PDLs are also given trainings and seminars facilitated in partnership with the Technical Education Skills Development Authority, and are encouraged to practice creative activities like painting.

Alimani also cited the institution’s initiatives to upgradeand improve its facilities, not only for the benefit of PDLs but also for its staff. The Kalinga District Jail also boasts of an accomplished escorting unit that ensures the safe
transport of PDLs, and a seven-member STAR team which has been helping the police in marijuana eradication operations, and is active in activities of the Provincial Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict.
