PiES celebrates Nutrition Month

July is Nutrition Month. Yearly, we celebrate this month and all schools including other local government units institutionalized this celebration. Pinget Elementary School is among others. It has been an annual campaign to let all Filipinos especially our young ones know the importance of nutrition.
The school in partnership with other stakeholders implemented activities and programs in relation to health and nutrition. We had our first Urine Screening Test last July 10, 2018 and was revalidated on July 20 and 23, 2018. A lot of doctors and nurses came from Department of Health Baguio to revalidate results of the first Urine Screening Test. The result was a lot better than what was aired on TV. The school in partnership with the community is exhausting all efforts to minimize health problems that may affect our pupils and that it includes proper nutrition among our pupils. Also, we had our deworming and physical check- ups to our pupils conducted by our school nurse. Moreover, feeding programs have already begun to minimize malnourished pupils in our school.
In celebration of the Nutrition Month, different grade levels conducted various contests with this year’s Nutrition Month theme: “Ugaliing Magtanim, Sapat na Nutrisyon Aanihin!” Activities include drawing contest, poster making contest, games, gardening/gulayan, and fruit- shake making contest. Also, pupils from the different grade levels were strongly advised to bring nutritious packed lunches and snacks and this will be supervised all throughout the year to encourage them to value their health and nutrition. The celebration was ended by a Culminating Activity on July 27, 2018. The speaker, who is also one of our faculty member, Ms. Lei K. Odayan promoted home food production through family food gardening during the program. Pupils, parents, and teachers ate sumptuous and nutritious meal after the program.
It is hoped that the celebration created awareness not only to our pupils but most especially to all the families of the school and the community to become resourceful in providing their own food gardens especially that here in the city, only few have vacant backyards and farmlands. We believe that having a food garden is having a direct access to variety of nutritionally- rich foods that is good for the children and for the family. EDEN ROSE BALICDANG, Pinget Elementary School
