Villagers in Pasil Kalinga endorse operation of multi-million US dollar new copper mines

Metallic mineral production in the Cordillera Region is expected to increase as well as job opportunities with Makilala Mining Co.Inc., (MCCI) starts its copper mines operation in Barangay Balatoc,Pasil, Kalinga. This Australian miner Celsius Resources’ with its Philippine subsidiary MMCI’s mine foot print will be set up in a 32-hectare area in the said town, the first copper mines in the country in 15 years. This developed after its mineral production sharing agreement (MPSA) was recently approved by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

It was re-echoed by Fay Apil, regional director of the Mines Geosciences Bureau – Cordillera (MGB-CAR) during a media forum, culminating her agency’s celebration of women’s month. Putting premium on environmental protection and public safety, Judy Rola, MCCI communications officer, emphasized that its multi-million US dollar copper project in Kalinga will not use tailings dam. ‘It will be a green mine,’ Rola stressed beside other projects.
Rola added that their company is presently processing several permits such as construction and water, among others.

In Celsius Resources’ company profile, states ‘is advancing a portfolio of copper dominant projects that, in production, would help support the continued electrification of global economies to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases. ‘We believe Celsius is well positioned to benefit from interrupted near- and mid-term copper supply, and strong copper prices.’ Copper discovery dates back 9000 BC, the world’s third most-used metal, and as a good conductor of electricity, nowadays used in the production of e-bikes/vehicles.
