Nutrition Council urges use of “Pinggang Pinoy” food plate guide

BAGUIO CITY – The National Nutrition Council (NNC) is encouraging citizens to follow a Filipino food plate guide “Pinggang Pinoy” coupled with physical activity as a way to achieve a healthy lifestyle on the celebration of the 45th National Nutrition Month themed “Kumain ng wasto at maging aktibo…push natin ‘to” with different government agencies in a conference on Wednesday, July 3, 2019.
The theme calls for everyone to advocate healthy lifestyle with good diet and increased physical activity. NNC Director Rita Papey introduced “Pinggang Pinoy”, a food guide developed by the Food Nutrition and Research Institute (FNRI), a food plate model designed for Filipinos showing proper portions of the three food groups: go, grow and glow.
“Pinggang Pinoy based menu is a food plate model developed by the FNRI, Food Nutrition and Research Institute which tries to show ano dapat ang proportion ng three food group, kasi kapag tayo ay kakain, dapat may grow, may glow at may go foods,” Papey said.
The director also said that the food serving sizes should be followed and Filipino meals should always be balanced.
“Ganito yan, tignan nyo, 50%, kalahati nun should be fruits and vegetables, and the other half, 50%, 17% is protein, 33% ang carbs,” she added. Papey also said that grow foods are foods rich in protein such as fish, meat, eggs and chicken.
Go foods are food rich in carbohydrates such as rice, bread, root crops, oats, and sweet corn. Glow foods represent fruits and vegetables and consist 50% of the plate.
Papey said that the health profile of every individual should always be taken into consideration and adjustments vary from each person’s health requirement or nutritional needs but also reminded everyone that the portion size should always be the same and balanced.
